Paperboard is changing the future of packaging. The European Union is adding new regulations and rules for a more sustainable future. By 2030 all packaging in the EU must be designed for recycling.
Paperboard has a unique set of fibers that allow it to be recycled up to 10 times, sometimes more. It’s often sustainably sourced and made with wood and recycled materials. Graphic Packaging International manufactures and delivers high quality paperboard to brands and companies worldwide.
Currently 87% of paperboard is recycled in Europe vs 42% of plastic. In the EU, single use plastic will face restrictions in the years to come. By 2030 most plastic packaging and parts in the EU must meet initial minimum recycled content targets. Items such as fresh fruit containers, paper cups, lids, bowls and plates will see higher restrictions.
In 2022 the European Commission proposed the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR.) This regulation aims to reduce packaging waste and improve packaging recyclability and recycling. The PPWR goes into effect in 2025 and development of secondary legislation starts.
By 2035 all packaging in the EU must be recycled at scale. By 2038 all packaging in the EU must meet stricter criteria for recyclability. The EU is taking big steps toward a safer and more sustainable future in recycling. Learn more about this at Graphic Packaging International.
