Product recalls made by The Consumer Product Safety Commission are issued for a reason a serious safety hazard has been identified. In some cases, these hazards can even lead to severe injuries or even death. Today, we’re bringing you the urgent news of three recent recalls involving potential fire and burn risks.
1. Berkshire Blanket Home Company Heated Throws and Blankets
Over 300,000 of these cozy but potentially dangerous throws and blankets are being recalled due to the risk of overheating and catching fire. The faulty wiring can cause the blankets to spark and ignite, posing a significant fire and burn hazard to users. If you own one of these throws or blankets, stop using it immediately and contact Berkshire Blanket Home Company for a full refund or replacement.
2. Empower Brands Power XL Dual-Basket Air Fryers
On December 14, Empower Brands issued a recall for two models of the PowerXL dual-basket air fryer, which were available for purchase both in-store and online at retailers like Target, Walmart, Kohl’s, and others. These models were sold between August 2021 and October 2023, with prices ranging from $60 to $190 depending on the specific model.
The affected PowerXL models are characterized as “egg-shaped air fryers” equipped with two baskets that can be used independently or together through a U-channel connector. Unfortunately, the U-Channel connector is prone to breaking, posing a burn hazard during use. The announcement states, “The plastic U-Channel connector used to optionally combine the two food baskets inside of the air fryers can break during use, posing a burn hazard.” Three reports of burns related to this issue have been received.
Consumers are strongly advised to cease using the recalled dual-basket air fryers immediately. These air fryers were available in black or cinnamon colors. To address the issue, individuals should contact Empower Brands to arrange for a full refund
3. Jetson Electric Bikes 42-Volt Rogue Self-Balancing Scooters (Hoverboards)
Tragically, two deaths have been attributed to these electric scooters due to the potential for the battery to overheat and explode, causing fire and severe burns. The issue stems from the lithium-ion batteries in the 42-volt hoverboards, which can overheat within the unit, leading to the risk of fires. This problem was notably common when self-balancing scooter technology initially emerged in 2015. Despite gaining immense popularity in the second half of the 2010s, hoverboards were banned by airlines due to safety concerns.
Jetson has decided to recall the hoverboards following two deaths last year that could be linked to these devices. The victims were a 10-year-old girl and her 15-year-old sister, who tragically died in a fire on April 1, 2022, in Hellertown, Pennsylvania. The fire marshal determined that a 42-volt Jetson Rogue was the point of origin of the fire, which then spread to other parts of the house, resulting in the fatalities and smoke inhalation injuries to the girls’ parents. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
This recall affects over 23,000 scooters, so if you own one, discontinue use immediately and contact Jetson Electric Bikes for a full refund and instructions on safely disposing of the scooter.
